Luxembourg is a western European country bordered by Germany, France and Belgium. Its official name is the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg being the only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy in the world. It is one of the smallest countries in the world, with 2.586 km² of size. There live 480.222 inhabitants approximately and its capital city, the largest one as well, is Luxembourg. Other major cities are Beaufort and Clervaux.
This country has a parliamentary representative democracy with a constitutional monarchy.
Due to its proximity to France and Germany, it is a trilingual country, being German and French the official languages, together with Luxembourgish that is mostly spoken, though not written.
This landlocked country has a maritime west coast climate, characterized by frequent precipitations, mainly at the end of the summer. Summers are generally warm.
Luxembourg has a considerably highly developed economy, and has proved to have the second highest GDP per capita in the world ( 79.589 USD ). It is also the second largest investment fund centre in the world and ranks fourth in best quality of life index.
This country is a founding member of the UN, NATO, the BENELUX , the EU and the Western EU. It joined the EU in 1957. Its official currency is the EURO since 2002. Luxembourg hosts many EU institutions and agencies. Being part of the BENELUX, it benefits from close trade and financial relations with Belgium and The Netherlands, being part of the European free market. It is the most important private banking centre of those countries who adopted the Euro as official currency.
Formerly distinguished by the steel industry economic sector economic foundations, it has in the last few years attracted the Communications and Banking and Financial services sector. Internet Companies such as Skype or eBay lodges its headquarters in this great and small country.
