Lithuania is a European country situated in the North of the continent and is one of the three Baltic States. It is set along the Southeastern shores of the Baltic Sea, bordering to Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Kaliningrad Oblast. It covers an area of 65.200 km², and has a population of 3.350.400 inhabitants approximately. Its capital and largest city is Vilnius. Other large cities are Kaunas and Klaipéda.
It climate is maritime and continental characterized by wet to moderate winters and summers.
It is a semi presidential Republic and the official language is Lithuanian. An independent country during centuries, it fell under soviet control in 1940. It is the first soviet republic to declare its renewed independence. It is a member of the NATO and the WTO. It joined the EU in 2004.
Lithuania has an economy of high average income and has a flat tax rate. It is one of the fastest growing economies in the EU and has the highest rating of Baltic States in the Economist Intelligence Units quality of life index, though its yearly average DGP per capita is 18.854 USD. Its official currency is the Lithuanian Litas.
Lithuania´s trading activity focuses mainly within the EU. Its economy is being boosted in the late years by a growing tourism industry. The infrastructure is very well developed, with modern railways, airports and highways. The government is emphasizing the importance of research in Biotechnology, laser equipment and Information technologies, and offer incentives for investments in the high technology sectors and high value added products.
Hungary holds the 101th position in the list of countries by immigrant population, published by the United Nations report World Population Policies 2005, with approximately 165.000 immigrants.
