Brief Introduction to Finland

Finland is a Nordic Country located in the North of Europe and borders to Sweden, Russia, Norway and Estonia. It covers an area of 338.145 Km² and has a population of 5.327.490 inhabitants, thus being one of the most sparsely populated countries in the EU, after Norway and Iceland. It has a humid and semi continental climate, being cooler in the North part, where the winter lasts 7 months and snow covers the land for about 5-6 months. The minimum temperature in winter is -20º and between 25º and 30º in July.

Being a Democratic Parliamentary Republic, the capital city is Helsinki, where a third of the Gross Domestic Product is produced. Other major cities are Espoo and Vantaa.

Finland joined the United Nations in 1955 and is member of the EU since 1995. It also was a founder member of the common currency, the Euro, which took over in 2002. The official languages are Finish and Swedish, although English is widely spoken.

Finland has been ranked the second most stable country in the world, in a survey based on social, economic, political and military indicators. It is an outstanding country in comparison of national performance such as the share of high technology manufacturing, public education, health care, rate of GDP growth and protection of civil liberties. It is the only Nordic Country joining the Eurozone, and the yearly average income is 28.061 Euros.

It is highly industrialized free market economy, and the largest sector is the one of services, followed by manufacturing and refining. Foreign Trade and the industry of electronics are also a major part of their economic foundations. Immigration is still new to Finland, as it holds the 103th position in the list of countries by immigrant population, published by the United Nations report World Population Policies 2005, with approximately 156.000 immigrants.
