The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in central Europe and borders Poland, Germany, Austria and Slovakia. The country is composed of the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia, as well as parts of Silesia. Its covers an area of 78.864 Km², and has a population of 10.424.926 inhabitants approximately. The capital city is Prague, the largest city of the country. Other major cities are Ceské Budejovice , Pilsen and Karlovy Vary. The official language is Czech, though German and English are widely spoken.
The country has a temperate continental climate with relatively hot summers and cold, cloudy winters, usually with snow. Most rain falls during the summer. The temperatures vary greatly depending on the elevation.
The Czech Republic is a member of the NATO since 1999 and of the European Union since 2004. Nowadays, the Czech Republic holds the EU Presidency. The official currency is the Czech Koruna though it is very likely that they will adopt the Euro by the end of 2009.
The Czech Republic possesses a developed economy, one of the most stable and prosperous of post communist estates, with a GDP per capita of 82% of the European Union average, being the yearly average income 25.754 USD. Its economic foundations are mainly services and industry. The Czech Republic is also a member of the World Trade Organization.
On top of all this, the Tourism industry provides substantial income to the country, creating employment for 1% of the population, as Prague is one of the most visited cities in Europe.
With regards to Education, the Programme for International Student Assessment, coordinated by the OECD, currently ranks the Czech education as the 15th best in the world, being higher than the OECD average.
It holds the 63th position in the list of countries by immigrant population, published by the United Nations report World Population Policies 2005, with approximately 453.000 immigrants.
